The Machherndl family has been making wine on their 8 hectare estate since 1786 in the heart of the Wachau region in Wosendorf, south west of the town of Krems. Erich Jr took over in 1998 and has become a dynamic representative of the younger Wachauer generation who successfully mixes modern techniques with traditional values.
Weingut Machherndl, an 8 hectare estate established in 1786, is run by 8th generation owner, Erich Machherndl, who believes in honest viticulture without compromise. His philosophy is simple: Keep focused on tradition with minimal intervention and manipulation in the cellar. Located in the heart of the Wachau Region the wines are produced from 100% estate grown grapes and produced from single-vineyard sites.
As a result of his explorations of new wine worlds, Erich has developed his own signature style: his wines are original and distinctive, characterized by purity and a finely balanced mixture of innovative and traditional ideas. For example, he plants his own scions in his vineyards, developing a ‘different kind’ of Chardonnay. His Smaragd wines are precise and do not exhibit the high levels of extraction and alcohol of many of his Smaragd producing neighbors. Machherndl’s wines highlight the unique qualities and nuances of his prime, terraced, cru vineyard holdings in the Hochrain, Kollmütz, Bachsatz and Kollmitz and are true representatives of their respective terroirs.
Elegant, focused and complex, the cool climate, Chardonnay Smaragd “Mal Anders” offers an intriguing, fragrant nose of bright stone fruit, tropical mango, ripe peach with hints of Williams pear, green melon and additional citrus notes. In the mouth, the wine exhibits invigorating, complex, concentrated flavors that echo the bouquet with additional notes of yellow apple and blossom honey. The Machherndl Chardonnay is long, precise and intense with fantastic acidity and an elegant, lingering finish. Unique wine!
