I am happy to bring news of many exciting additions to Singular Selections’ portfolio.
After traveling in and falling in love with Sicily, over the past year, Singular Selections is now working with four, exciting, small production, artisan, wineries from the beautiful island of Sicilia. I have also renewed an old relationship with a Trentino superstar, who is making wines of amazing purity and breeding along with a Friulian winery making wines of great distinction within the Friulian zone. Singular Selections’ core, producer family continues to out do themselves with an impressive range of wines now in the market.
Azienda Agricola Porta del Vento, Camporeale, Palermo
Currently, one of Sicily’s “it” wineries. Under the artistry of owner/winemaker Marco Sferlazzo, Porta del Vento is making some of the most exciting, site specific, terroir driven, emotional wines in all of Sicily and beyond. Organic
Azienda Agricola Destro, Montelguardia, Randazzo, Catania
Destro is producing a small amount of organic, terroir driven, stylistically, traditional wines. Destro’s Etna Rosso is a quintessential, classic expression of Etna Rosso and the volcanic flavors and terroir Mt. Etna. Organic.
Azienda Agricola Irene Badala, Contrada Santo Spirito, Passopisciaro, Catania
Irene Badala is a miniscule, 3 hectare estate with vines planted 600 meters up the slope on Mt. Etna making highly personal, site specific, singular wines. Organic.
Azienda Agricola Gaglio, Olieveri, Messina
Historic, family owned winery that has been making, terroir driven, meticulously produced, wines since the early 1900s. Organic
Azienda Agricola Pojer e Sandri, Faedo, Trentino
Pojer e Sandri is one of Italy’s most innovative and remarkable wineries. Their wines display a precision and purity that is unrivaled in Italy.
Azienda Agricola Comelli Paolino Colloredo di Soffumbergo, Friuli
The Comelli family’s singular, pursuit of excellence has resulted in their vibrant, complex Sauvignon Blanc and their truly, stunning Pignolo, made from the rare, indigenous grape of the same name.
Azienda Agricola La Bellanotte, Farra di Isonzo, Friuli
La Bellanotte's Friulian wines continue to impress and deliver vintage after vintage. The Bellanotte, $14.99 retail, all estate grown, Pinot Grigio exhibits stunning concentration, finesse and breeding for its modest price. Bellanotte's definitive Pinot Grigio Ramato exemplifies the quality, which can be achieved in the Collio and Isonzo DOCs of Friuli. The Bellanotte 2011 Picolit is the finest example of this wine I or likely anyone has ever tasted. Voted the best dessert wine of the vintage in two, major, Italian wine guides!
Azienda Agricola SassodiSole, Montalcino, Toscana
The brilliant Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines from Roberto Terzuoli, owner, viticulturist and winemaker of SassodiSole (stone of the sun) display impressive power and structure, typical of the best wines of Montalcino but also offer a rare, stylish elegance rarely found in the Brunello category. Consistent with all red wines in the Singular Selections’ portfolio, Sasso di Sole’s wines are limited production, estate grown, traditionally produced, natural wines with no barriques or intervention of any kind, once the grapes arrive at the winery, which is an unusual expression of Brunello amidst the preponderance of international styled Brunelli dominating the category.
Azienda Agricola Antico Borgo di Sugame, Greve in Chianti, Toscana
Antico Borgo di Sugame, Singular Selection's tiny, organic gem in the heart of the Chianti Classico has delivered another fabulous wine! The 2012 Sugame Chianti Classico is perhaps, their finest expression of Chicanti Classico to date and presents stylish, terroir driven, elegance and elevated breeding that accompanies the structure, typical for the estate's wines. There is a very, small quantity remaining of Sugame's 2011, Chianti Classico Riserva.
Azienda Agricola Le Bertille, Montepulciano, Toscana
The perfect growing season of the 2010 vintage has brought another, definitive expression to the Le Bertille, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano with dark, rich, almondine character, great depth, impressive structure and lively, vibrant acidity. The most exciting Vino Nobile release to date from Le Bertille who continues to release brilliant, classically styled wines. Le Bertille has taken another giant leap forward with the release of their 2012 and the upcoming 2013 Rosso di Montepulciano, which is, in my opinion, easily the finest expression of this wine in the category. Olimpia Roberti of Le Bertille is, simply stated, producing the finest wines found in the Vino Nobile category.
Azienda Agricola Camerano, Barolo, Piemonte
The remarkable Camerano winery in Barolo has once again released an extraordinary range of wines. Their Dolcetto and Barbera d'Alba feature a quintessential, expression of these Piedmontese varieties produced with time honored, traditional viticulture and vinification. But it is once again Camerano's two Barolo crus "Cannubi San Lorenzo" and "Terlo" that trumpet the amazing wines coming from this tiny, historic winery in the heart of Barolo. Both crus produced extraordinary, singular, quality wines in 2010. The 2010 Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo is Camerano's best since their classic 2001 vintage. 2010 Barolo Terlo stays true to its classic "Barolo from Barolo" character displaying amazing terroir and structure and may surpass Camerano’s Cannubi in the 2010 vintage.
Azienda Agricola Gianni Doglia, Castagnole Lanze, Piemonte
Gianni Doglia's 2015 Moscato d'Asti again has proved to be the standard against, which all other Moscatos are compared. The wine displays its unrivaled balance or rich, sweet fruit and refreshing acidity with a complex, concentrated mid-palate and long, lingering, clean finish. This is outside the normal reality of Moscato d'Asti.
Elysian, Valdobbiadene, Veneto
Elysian's Prosecco DOCG Superiore, that recently won the Gold Medal at the Vinitaly fair, as the best charmat product in all Italy, have once again produced a Prosecco of amazing elegance and breeding. One of the standard bearers in the zone.
Terriero, Valdobbiadene, Veneto
Singular Selections "other" Prosecco from Gianluca Salamon and Desiderio Bortolin; Terriero Brut DOC is a superbly refreshing, all estate grown, highly bred but less costly Prosecco Brut from the Trevsio DOC.
Azienda Agricola Ciavolich, Miglianco, Abruzzo
Chiara Ciavolich's, 100% stainless steel, "Ancilla" Montepulciano di Abruzzo is produced on the family’s, coastal affected vineyards near Pescara. Fresh and ripe, the 2014 offers the grip and texture on the pallet found in more costly wines. Possessing everything one could ask for in an affordable, Italian red wine.
Schubert Wines, Martinborough, Wairarapa
Finally, jumping over to New Zealand, Kai Schubert of Schubert Wines, one of the world's, elite Pinot Noir producers. His Pinot Noir "Block B", produced exclusively from 100% Dijon clones is a brilliant, Burgundian, expression of new world Pinot Noir. Schubert's “Block B” 2010, 2011, 2012 and the upcoming 2013 Pinot Noir "” were all rated by Robert Parker, as the top scoring Pinots of their respective vintages in all of New Zealand, at 93+ points.
